The Orchid

Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. (Psalm 34:5)

The orchid with upturned white face

Opens her mouth, spotted pink,

And stretches her thin, frail neck

To the sun.

She's a starving and blind baby bird

Mouthing the sky for her food.

If the sun should withdraw his warm rays

Her face would shrivel and fall.

But she blossoms in brilliant dependence,

Her radiant face unashamed.
